  1. Nice presentation! You stated that Decitabine is bactericidal and what that meant but could you elaborate on if this is an expected result or even a result you wanted to find or did you want it to be bacteriostatic?

    1. Hey Nico! All the research on Decitabine has shown that it has qualities of it being bacteriostatic instead of bactericidal so we were not expecting our results to show that it more closely associates with a bactericidal agent. We went in thinking it would be a bacteriostatic agent, but by the end of the experiments found out that Decitabine can be utilized in more than one way! Thank you!

  2. What is the significance of determining that decitabine has bactericidal properties rather than bacterio-static properties?

    1. Hey Julia! determining that Decitabine has bactericidal properties instead of bacteriostatic properties was significant because it demonstrated that Decitabine has more than one use and with extensive research it has been shown that Decitabine simply inhibits the growth of bacteria, but with the research done in the discovery lab I can also say that Decitabine can be utilized to kill bacteria as well.

  3. Are there any other possible alternatives to antibiotics that might also be able to fight bacterial infections and reduce deaths from resistant strains?

    1. Hi Melissa! I know that the phage lab did extensive research on that this semester, but I do know that phage therapy, using different antibodies and probiotics, and the use of antimicrobial peptides are all upcoming discoveries that can potentially help in antibiotic resistance and also reduce deaths from resistant strains.

    1. Hi Chhavinder! We decided on ampicillin as our positive control because it has qualities that resemble a bactericidal agent and it has been proven to effectively kill Gram-positive bacteria, and we chose DMSO as our negative control because not all compounds are soluble directly in water, so we used DMSO to try to extract Decitabine and see how it reacts with the dimethyl sulfoxide.
