    1. I don’t believe there is a definite answer to this, but allicin is considered a homeopathic medicine, which is not commonly used in Western medicine. Homeopathy is based on the use of natural substances like plants and minerals. As mentioned in the poster, allicin is the active compound in garlic, making it a plant derived compound. There are studies that have shown allicin to be effective in cell lines at inducing cell death and inhibiting cell proliferation, lowering blood pressure, killing fungus, and lowering cholesterol, to name a few. It just has not been widely researched in terms of its effectiveness on stains of Salmonella.

    1. No, we did not! There are a few reasons we used Salmonella Typhimurium in the lab and not other strains. Salmonella Typhimurium exhibits the same symptoms in mice that Salmonella Typhi presents in humans, which is typhoid fever. This allows us to perform animal testing prior to human trials. Salmonella Typhimurium only causes food poisoning in humans, so it is also much safer to work with than Salmonella Typhi. There are many strains of Salmonella but our lab was focused on trying to find an antibiotic that would work to target Salmonella Typhi in humans.
