Hi! I was just wondering how DNA normally becomes damaged, you mentioned that different diseases, like cancer cause this, but how do the diseases go about this process?
DNA damage occurs all the time, its caused by outside stress and naturally occurs in replication, the issue is when DNA damage its self is expressed in the transcription proteins of the cell instead of just causing the cell to die.
Have you considered possible methods of introducing this gene into human cells? Or would the route be to try and introduce the protein itself into damaged cells?
That would be the next stage, testing adding the isolated gene to damaged DNA cells to see if it can repair the damage when in excess, and then testing how we would do that to cancerous or damaged cells in an organism, not just in a petri dish- It would have to start with the isolated DNA into damaged cells and then advance to treating a human organism.
If you implied this research to real life problems would you need to the pcr again since there was an error or would you proceed based on your hypothesis?
Most likely preform the PCR again to proceed to further testing, however we are able to draw tentative conclusions by conferring with other results of the same experiment that didn’t incur this error.

What does it mean for the expression to be upregulated, and the key differences between the cell’s DNA behavior in either case?

It means more of that specific gene is being produced and thus, more of its corresponding protein is being produced and used up by the cell.
