  1. Awesome job! Given your background information that combining carvacrol and ampicillin had an additive effect in killing bacteria, do you think they work by the same or different mechanism? How might you test this?

    1. I know that Carvacrol disrupts the cell membrane of bacteria which makes it effective. I hypothesis that a-lot of the antibiotic resistant bacteria that ampicillian has an adaptation in its cell wall. In order to test that we would have to use a strain of bacteria with a known adaptation in it cell wall and compare ampicillin effect when static vs when Carvacrol is involved.

  2. Really good job Cian. I thought you had one of the best presentations I viewed tonight. With that said, I had one quick question regarding the potential implications of your results. The significant results in your 2:1 dilution of carvacrol show that concentrations under 5uM are not effective as an antibiotic. Since high concentrations of carvacrol are needed to see an antibiotic effect, does this most likely mean it would be difficult to administer as a therapeutic?

    1. Yes I did have that concern also but I do know that Carvocrol comes from Oregano Oil a substance that has been extensively looked at. I do want to run test in order to determine the compound toxicity. But what does have me excited that I mentioned in my presentation was Carvocrol’s ability to increase how effective ampicillin is. So even if Carvocrol cannot be administered as its own drug I would like to further investigate if Carvocrol could act as a “Booster”.

    1. I don’t think we are at that stage where we can determine the best way to administer Carvocrol. I think the next step is to determine Carvocrols toxicity so we can determine if it is safe to administer it to humans.
