  1. You mentioned that antibiotic resistance is a massive problem around the world, why would you say antibiotic resistant bacteria are so prevalent/or on the rise?

    1. Antibiotic resistance is so prevalent because of a few factors. Antibiotics are overused in agriculture as well as over prescribed in clinical settings. Since these issues occur so regularly more bacteria that have mutations allowing them to be resistant to the antibiotics will survive and reproduce. This is causing a rise of bacteria that are resistant to multiple classes of bacteria. Since no new antibiotic classes have been created since the 1980’s we are running out of antibiotics to treat these multi-resistant strains of bacteria.

    1. Tachystatins are antimicrobial peptides found in horseshoe crab blood. They are not the only antimicrobial peptides present but they are a major contributor in horseshoe crabs innate immune system. These peptides were also identified in venoms of spiders and scorpions which are closely related to the horse shoe crab.
