Since bacteria can both be gram negative and gram positive, to fight resistance, if it works for both types of bacteria it will be extremely effective at treating various types of bacterial infections.
There is not a specific reason, however, in the past venoms were unsuccessful since the cytotoxicity was too high, so taking a specific compound was our idea since the compound may be less toxic. I’m unsure of the effect on eukaryotic cells, more research would have to be conducted to discover this!
Why is it important for melittin to be effective against both gram neg and gram pos bacteria?

Is there a reason why melittin was chosen as antimicrobial specifically when it comes from venom? As in, does it have any effect on eukaryotic cells?

do we know what melittin does to our human cells? or if our immune system has/could develop a response to it?

Not much is known about how it reacts in human cells, further testing would need to be conducted to see how it interacts.
