The research done in this lab will help with the treatment of cancer because it is a cheap and quick way to test potential drugs as possible chemotherapeutics. This drug has cytotoxic properties (explained better below) that will possibly be able to kill cells in a way to stop the growth of tumors and eventually kill the cells that make up the tumor and be a treatment for cancer. It can be a long time for a chemotherapy to be in drug trials and this is a way to test more drugs in order to find a cure.
We chose Phospholipase A2 because it has cytotoxic properties found in honey bee and snake venom that break down the phosphate bonds in DNA that cause it to denature and the cell will undergo apoptosis.
PA2 is able to break down the phosphate bonds that hold together DNA and it will cause the cell to not be able to undergo mitosis and it will cause apoptosis. Sorry I forgot to fully explain this
The PA2 was not fully isolated as it was in the food of the flies, however, the larvae were only allowed to consume that food while in the experiment because the vials were sealed. The drug was fully mixed into the food before the flies were exposed.

We chose the amount of drugs by creating a max dose which is basically the pure drug exposed to the flies, we then did a 1:2 dilution in order to create a large dose response curve that had a larger gap between each dose. This allowed us to see where the drug was the closest to a “hit” and then in further research we would be able to test closer to that dose in hopes to find a potential chemotherapeutic.
how will the research you have done in this lab help with prevention/treatment of cancer?

why did you choose to study phospholipase A2 specifically?

this is explained in a couple of the comments below, I am sorry I did not fully explain this as many people were confused.

How did you decide to test Phospholipase A2, and how was it isolated for your experiments?
