It wasn’t completely clear why you chose Alpha Pinene. Why specially Alpha Pinene? Are there other compounds out there that have the same properties that could be a similar candidate for testing?
Good question, apha-Pinene comes from a plant Zanthoxyium anrmatum, and nermous compunds from Zanthoxyium anrmatum have been found to exhibit anti microbial properties. One study tested various different parts of Zanthoxyium anrmatum and found it exhibited anti microbial properties on several different strains of bacteria, including Salmonella and MERSA. And so alpha-Pinene was just one of many compounds from Zanthoxyium anrmatum.
Enjoyed the presentation, do you expect that the compound you want to test next, mycrocin B will have a greater impact on bacterial growth than Alpha-pinene?
They were not necessarily inconclusive, it was just that our compound did not exhibit any antimicrobial effect on Salmonella; which is not a bad thing. Out of thousands of compounds that are tested most will not have any effect on Salmonella, and this can help to narrow down the compounds that do work since we now know that alpha-Piene does not work.

Yes, another person in our class tested mycrocin B, and found that it did exhibit anti microbial properties based on the work they did in this class.

What do you think might be the main reason behind why your test results were inconclusive?
