  1. You said at around 4:30 you did see that Myrcene helped in salmonella but not enough to constitute a hit. What is a hit?

    1. Hi! A ‘hit’ means that the amount of bacteria growth within that well was either low enough (which would be an antibiotic) or high enough (which would be a probiotic) to signify that the compound is stopping or encouraging growth. We determine it statistically using standard deviation 🙂

  2. What are some other ways this compound can be utilized if it halts reproduction of the bacteria but does not kill it?

    1. Hi! Great question! Just because the compound does not kill bacteria does not mean that it can’t be used as an antibiotic in the future. A bacteriostatic antibiotic would not kill bacteria, but halt growth enough for your body’s natural immune response to gain control over the bacterial infection. They are just as useful just in a different way!

    1. Hi! The compound acting in a bacteriostatic way means that it does not permanently kill bacteria. This may sound like it means it wouldn’t work well as an antibiotic, but actually, it is just as useful as a bactericidal drug. By temporarily stopping bacterial growth, the compound gives your body time to enact its natural immune response, stopping the infection just as effectively.
