A positive control tests the validity of the experiment by creating the result expected. We chose Ampicillin as our positive control because it has been proven to be a reliable antibiotic. We hoped to achieve the same results with Silver Nanoparticles as Ampicillin.
The dosage we used 10mg/mL which is the highest dose possible in the human bloodstream. There is evidence that suggests silver nanoparticles can be toxic if used in high doses for a prolonged time. The Silver Nanoparticles we used were nonaddictive, whereas some in the past have been addictive and caused issues such as Argyria. Argyria is caused by overexposure to silver which turns the skin blue. Low dosed do not seem to cause issues in the body so far. There needs to be further studies to determine the exact risks.
Can you expand on what it means for your nanoparticles to be bactericidal and how it effects the bacteria?

Bactericidal means that the antibiotics kill the bacteria. Whereas bacteriostatic means that the antibiotic would inhibit growth of the bacteria.

At what dose do you predict silver nanoparticles to be ineffective in killing salmonella typeimurium?

We didn’t test a dose that was ineffective but for future research we hope to determine this. It would be a smaller dose than 0.625 mg/mL.

Can silver nanoparticles harm the human body? I wonder if they body would react negatively to them.
