Hi James! Great job on your presentation. You mentioned that there are two types of phages, and that your phage is called a lysogenic phage. Does the type of phage affect how effective it will be in therapy? If so, are there measures you can take for isolated phages that are in the less effective category?
Hello Jenny! Our phage is actually considered temperate, which can induce either the lytic or lysogenic cycle. This certainly effects its use in therapy as it does not kill all bacteria during infection. With that said, genetic engineering of the phage can knock-out genes responsible for the lysogenic cycle, resulting in the phage solely inducing the lytic cycle.
You had a fabulous presentation! The information that you included in your presentation was not too specific and not too broad-a perfect balance. I would like to know if you performed a restriction digest on your phage and if so, did the cluster confirm your prediction that you isolated a temperate phage?
Hello Alli! Thanks for the positive feedback. Unfortunately, we were not able to perform restriction digest or PCR to help confirm and verify a cluster, as our quality control gel did not show quality isolated DNA. Therefore, all conclusions are based solely on morphological findings.
