  1. What is a “phage cluster” and how would it be used in a future experiment? Also, I love the name of your phage!

    1. You can think of a phage cluster like a phage’s family tree. Phage with similar traits are grouped into clusters for ease of classification. If a specific phage shows promise against a type of bacteria, it is likely that others within its cluster may also be successful against that same bacteria.

  2. What is a lytic phage? Also, your findings were really cool and how your phage was different from others in the laboratory. I really liked how you talked about each image and its significance from your research it really contributed to your presentation!

    1. A lytic phage a type of phage that has a desirable trait when identifying bacteriophage. It signifies that the phage predictably initiates the lytic cycle when infecting a bacteria. This cycle results in cell death rather than incubation within the bacteria’s genome

    1. The restriction digest would give us the breakdown on the phage’s DNA and would assist us in classifying the phage further.

  3. You mentioned that the bacteria you are targeting is tuberculosis but you experimented with M. smegmatis instead. Could your or another lytic mycobacteriophage be directly transferred to tuberculosis for therapeutic purposes? If not, do you know by what mechanism the phage could be altered to be effective in tuberculosis?

    1. With a bit more information of our phage, with help of the restriction digest experiment, we would be able to hypothesize our phage’s cluster and identify other phage with similar traits. There is a possibility that a phage within that cluster has had success at destroying tuberculosis or other close relatives.
