Since we are marketing a GMO to mothers, we want to use a plant that has been used in a milk production. Also, soybeans are a common plant model for GMOs and accessible to us.
This is an extremely interesting concept! Have you looked into the possibilities of this becoming a possibility? I am curious about the side-effects or possible impacts of this and how it would compare to breast milk or formula.
I think once the lactoferrin is isolated, a mouse or chimpanzee model should probably be used to test for any side effects of the milk, but theoretically since it is generally consumed by human babies there should be none. Dr. DeDecker fully intends of exploring the possibilities of this supplemented formula becoming a reality.
The soybean plant would just be making the milk protein, but we did not get far enough to measure the amount of lactoferrin that would be produced in the plant. That milk protein will then be added to formula. I didn’t make that entirely clear in the video!
The plant promoter and terminator are recognized by the replication machinery of the plant and ensure expression of the gene rather than it laying dormant in the soybeans genome.
Why would we use soy beans and not another plant?

How much milk would the soy bean plant be expected to produce? How does it compare to a mother breast-feeding? Great job btw!!

What does the plant promoter/ terminator do? Why is that included in the plasmid? Great job!
