  1. The idea of testing the entire plant to find other compounds in the plant is interesting. Do you have any ideas of what other compounds from the plant could be studied?

    1. Thank you for the question. Terpenoids are also found in the ginkgo biloba plant. There is evidence that these terpenoids have some utility in chemoprevention (suppression of cancer causing agents) in breast carcinogenesis. Given a chance to further study the plant I would be interested in studying these terpenoids. If they show utility in chemoprevention perhaps, they could aid in treatment as well.

    1. That’s a good question. Generally, chemotherapy weakens the bodies cells and ideally the cancer cells aren’t able to repair themselves, but the healthy cells can. Radiation functions by damaging the DNA. One of the problems with cancer is that it can mutate and become resistant to treatments. Attacking the cancer using both chemotherapy and radiation is a synergistic function that helps to prevent that drug resistance. Another cool thing about synergistic treatments is that in some cases you can use lower doses of each specific treatment which may reduce some negative side effects.

  2. Do you believe that in further experiments using higher concentrations of ginkgetin with radiation that it would actually prove to work synergistically with the radiation and therefore work as a chemotherapeutic?

    1. That’s a good question and I feel like I don’t have a great answer. One of the problems we faced with this experiment is that we had a limited amount of ginkgetin. The findings from our experiment does not support the conclusion that increased dosages of ginkgetin will have a statistically significant effect as a chemotherapeutic. However, I still believe that it may be worthwhile to repeat the experiment with a significantly increased dose. Perhaps increasing the dose by 10 or even 100 times could demonstrate a significant effect.

    1. Thank you for asking. We did have a number of limiting factors in the experiment. A couple of major factors that come to mind is the time constraint and the amount of ginkgetin we had available. If we had more time to conduct the experiment, we would have been able to complete more than two trials and determine if our data was consistently replicable. The other constraint that we had was that we only had a limited amount of ginkgetin. It may have been worthwhile to conduct a study with a significantly higher dose of ginkgetin to help determine if the findings would have been different.
