  1. Hi! I think you might’ve uploaded an incorrect file, but I still want to ask general questions from reading the poster anyways: Why is inducing the lytic lifecycle important for medical applications? Have phages been used in medicine before?

    1. I am so sorry, I definitely did upload the wrong file! Thanks for catching that. So a lytic lifecycle is when the phage used the host cell to replicate itself and lyses, or kills, the host cell. Therefore, lytic phages are more beneficial to be used in phage therapy because they will kill the bacterial cells causing an infection. The phage we isolated was a lysogenic phage, so it would only lyse some of the bacterial cells. Yes, phage have been used in medicine before as phage therapy. They have been used to treat infections such as cystic fibrosis. Phage therapy is not researched enough, however, which makes phage therapy not very common.

    1. So the original goal was just to isolate a bacteriophage from a soil sample. Once we isolated it, we were trying to learn more about the phage and characterized it such as plaque morphology, the titer, and the phage morphology. The goal of the research is to find a phage that can be added to a large database that can hopefully one day be used to treat bacterial infections rather than using antibiotics.
