Once our phage is clustered and archived, its data will be available to scientists all over the world, thus providing more information on temperate, Siphovirdae phages because we discovered a new phage, MermaidMan. I do not believe our specific phage will be used as a therapeutic, but it will add knowledge to the scientific community. This knowledge will hopefully lead to a therapeutic used in phage therapy someday.
Staphylococcus is a very common bacterial infection. Finding a replacement to antibiotics for this infection would be monumental. An experiment was completed with Podoviridae and Myoviridae phages that showed some success. Therefore, testing our Siphoviridae phage could also show positive results. Testing our phage against Salmonella would indicate phage’s success rate as a pesticide.
Phages have the potential to kill the bacteria that is harmful to humans such as Salmonella. By infecting the Salmonella bacteria as the host cell, our phage could possibly enter the lytic cycle and lyse the harmful host.
Thank you! Phage cocktails are used to broaden the utility for phage formulations to treat bacterial infections. Cocktails also prevent the development of phage-resistant bacterial mutants because they contain multiple phages.
